Ossining is a volunteer village department with seven fire companies in five separate buildings, covering 3.5 square miles. The oldest still operating company was founded in 1812, and the youngest was founded in 1922. The current roster has 484 names, and approximately 150 are active. They typically respond to more than 500 alarms per year.
As part of this study, Dr. Charles Jennings of Manitou, Inc. performed a fire department management study that included response time mapping and surveying of members willingness to operate in combined facilities. Mitchell Associates performed the following:
- Needs analysis programing
- Evaluation of the existing building stock
- Modelling of various consolidation combinations
- Evaluation of alternative sites to support the results of the response time mapping
- Cost budgeting
- Recommendations
In a follow up, Mitchell Associates designed a substation.
