Newton Fire Headquarters; Newton, Ma
In collaboration with Schwartz/Silver Associates, Architect of Record

Winner of a 2019 Silver Award from F.I.E.R.O Fire Station Design Symposium

This 30,288 sq. ft. project, which includes renovation of a historic 1926 fire headquarters in Newton, MA, is a collaborative project by Mitchell Associates and Schwartz/Silver of Boston. In addition to the renovation, the project calls for replacing Fire Station 3, located nearby, and connecting the two structures with a central core that houses an Emergency Operations Center (EOC) and back-up dispatch. The strengthening of the EOC became an important priority for the city following the bombing at the Boston Marathon (the Marathon route passes in front of the historic headquarters building). The facility will also house a private ambulance company. One major challenge was placing all the required functions on a narrow, triangular site.
