Consolidation Of Fire Stations; Hudson, Ny
Architect of Record: Mitchell Ross Associates Architects, P.C.

Gold Station Style Design Award Winner from Fire Chief Magazine

The City of Hudson Department of Fire is the oldest active volunteer fire department in the State of New York., chartered in 1794 as the J.W. Edmonds Hose Co. No 1 and H.W. Rogers Hose Co. No. 2.  The department is an essential component of the community with 130 active and 800 total members.

For historic reasons, Hudson had five independent fire companies housed in five one-truck stations.  Two of these independent companies were next door to each other, and all were within 9 blocks of each other.

Work was started in 2002 to design a new station to consolidate.  Mitchell Ross Associates Architects designed renovations of an existing 7,640 square foot garage and adding 15,113 square feet of new space.

The building is state-of-the-art, reflecting the most current thinking about the needs of the community and the volunteer firefighters, including: Indoor training facilities with ladder evolutions, rappelling, confined space extrication, SCBA maze training and a classroom, as well as a FEMA funded cardio health facility.

The new building has allowed the members to bring the community in on a regular schedule for events such as NASCAR Sundays.

Hudson was featured in the documentary “Into the Fire,” by the Academy Award winning director Bill Couturie, which aired on the History Channel in October 2006. See photos from the filming of this documentary by clicking here.
